All You Need To Know About Spandan

Spandan is the annual media fest of VIPS - TC, Delhi.

“SPANDAN… SPANDAN!!!”, chorused all of us together. The cheers of Spandan filled the air around us at all times. A charismatic aura surrounded us. From day 1 of preparations to the final outcome, it was sure a bumpy-but-exciting ride. And I am here to share some parts of this ride with you all. Let’s start with the very basics.

What is Spandan?

Spandan is the annual media fest put together by the 5th - semester BA(JMC) students of Vivekananda Institute of Professional Studies - Technical Campus (VIPS - TC), Delhi, as part of their curriculum. It is one of the biggest media fests in Delhi. Since the inception of Spandan in 2003, it has become synonymous with spreading colours of joy and enthusiasm and designing a platform that provides an array of opportunities to the talented youth. Spandan is a magical collision of art, hardwork, and patience. It is a vibrant extravaganza of creative expression and innovation. Spandan is vital to the media industry as it brings together media professionals and aspirants, competitors, veterans, proteges, and everyone with a passion for learning.

Purpose of Spandan

VIPS - TC is one of the most renowned educational institutions in India. So is its annual media fest, Spandan. Spanning over 2 days, Spandan is a platform for media veterans, professionals, academicians, and students to gather and exchange valuable information. It offers a stimulating opportunity for novices and experts alike.

Well, if you ask me to sum up the need and purpose of Spandan in under 50 words, it’d be something like this:

  • To sharpen and improve students’ event management abilities, i.e., how to prepare, plan, organise and execute an event.

  • To facilitate industry-academia interface for students of Journalism and Mass Communication.

  • To encourage and showcase young and upcoming talent in various media-related fields.

  • To instil creativity, excitement, and happiness in every organiser, participant, and attendee.

A brief background run on Spandan

But how has Spandan reached the stage where it is today? When was the cornerstone of its grandeur laid? The inaugural edition of Spandan was successfully proposed, planned, and organised by our super-duper seniors in 2003. The rest, as they say, is history. My batch, i.e. the BA(JMC) batch of 2020-2023, organised the 18th edition of Spandan on the 14th and 15th of December 2022. From initially being a 3-day media fest, it is now a 2-day affair.

Events under Spandan

Each year, we host various competitive, non-competitive, educational, and cultural events under the banner of Spandan for thousands of students from different colleges and universities in and around Delhi to gather, participate, learn, and enjoy.

In the past 18 years of Spandan, no stone has been left unturned. From Cinephile - the Film Festival to Media Panchayat, t-shirt painting, literary and personality contests, street plays, photo exhibitions, poetry recitation, ad-mads, battle of bands, dance competitions, fashion shows, RJ hunt, and JAM sessions, we have done and continue to do it all. We bring the vividness of culture, music, dance, theatre, photography and a lot more to life, moment by moment, effort by effort.

Spandan gives you a much-needed purpose. It is something to look forward to in the final year of your graduation. It eventually grows on you and becomes the most cherishable part of your college life. It pushes your boundaries like never before. You make new friends or at least get a chance to talk to your batchmates who you’ve not exchanged a word with during the first 2 years of your college. You somewhat discover your hidden talents and learn from your surroundings. Witnessing your collective creativity bloom into something tangible is truly an incomparable experience. Not to exaggerate, but such is the tone and tenor of Spandan.

The upcoming blog in the series focuses on departmental segregation under Spandan.
